Europe has a city to suit every personality: from the culture vultures of Dubrovnik, the comedians of Edinburgh, and to the party goers of Madrid. Each of these cities has its obvious appeal, but for those seeking a unique experience, here are a few tips on how to make your visit that little bit more special.
Island hopping in Dubrovnik
If you are considering booking a city break, Dubrovnik has become a popular choice, with good reason. This gem sparkles on the watercolor Dalmatian Coast and charms visitors with the marble streets and Baroque buildings of its Old Town. With forts and monasteries to explore, beautiful beaches to bathe on, and plentiful bars to sit and take it easy in, you might think there’s no reason to leave the city during your holiday. However, take a boat trip out to one of the surrounding islands—Lokrum, Mljet, and Korčula—to add even more diversity to your trip.
Lokrum is a 15-minute ferry ride away and boasts treasures such as the Purple Cave, a Dead Sea lake and island peacocks. Mljet achieved National Park status in the 60s with its palette of lush green and sapphire blue—a beauty to be seen with your own eyes to believe. Watch the sunset to the sound of local music in Korčula while sitting on top of the islet’s fortress for a perfect end to your day.
Boats sail out regularly to all three destinations, so be sure to board at least one.
Find the speakeasy in Edinburgh
A windy city surrounded by high crags and shrouded in ghostly myths, Edinburgh is perhaps most famous for its castle (around 1.2 million visitors a year!) and annual Fringe Festival. Throughout the month of August, people from all around the globe come together to partake in the world’s largest arts event. If you’re planning on catching a few shows this year, take note of this hidden gem that is part of the city’s burgeoning cocktail bar scene — you’ll definitely want a nightcap after some world-class comedy.
Panda & Sons is a modern day speakeasy that can be entered by opening a secret bookcase door in a barbershop found on Queen Street. Inside you will be greeted by suave staff in 1920s attire complemented by a low-light setting with a jazzy soundtrack. From the sophisticated drinks list, pick the Birdcage Cocktail for a drink that literally smoulders.
Join the celebrations in Madrid
Vibrant Madrid is Spain’s capital city, and one that invigorates all through the day and night. Although there’s always plenty of things to do in Madrid, make like a bonafide local and plan your visit in time for the San Isidro Festival that starts on May 15th. This event celebrates the city’s patron saint and marks the start of the bull fighting season. Folk in traditional attire will dance around Plaza Mayor where you can find open-air concerts and local food vendors. Head to Casa de Campo park for some serious fiestas, and conclude your weekend with Cocido Madrileño, Madrid’s chickpea-based traditional dish.
