10 Things We Learned in MarkEd

marked-2a

Every year, the UP Junior Marketing Association holds a Major Marketing Event (MME) with the objective to promote the importance of marketing within the youth. This year’s UP JMA MME presents MarkEd: Marketing to Move the Nation Forward, a two-day summit that aims to provide students with practical marketing skills and show them how this can be used as a powerful tool to move businesses, industries, and nations forward. This year’s MME focused on tourism as it challenges students to find innovative new ways to market tourist spots in the Philippines.

The event featured a series of talks by Mr. Carlo Rieza, Mrs. Mio Chongson, Mrs. Maricel Gatchalian-Badilla, Mr. Raf Dionisio, and Ateneo CODE, continued on with a mentorship by University of the Philippines students and alumni, and culminated with a Marketing Case presentation by all the participating groups.

Hear from ten of our delegates from the high school and college divisions on what they learned from MarkEd!

10. Marketing in the real world.

I have to say that I left with the knowledge and skills needed to effectively market and find the value of whatever it is I’m trying to sell to others. More than just this however, I was able to experience and feel what marketing is in the real world. As a graduating high school student, getting a glimpse of the realities of modern day marketing in the Philippines was a great help to my own personal growth and learning. MarkEd was truly a life changing, and eye – opening experience.

  • Ignacio Limjap, Ateneo de Manila University

9. Marketing plays such an important role in our society (specially in the aspect of tourism)

MarkEd made me realise how marketing plays such an important role in our society specially in the aspect of promoting tourism in our country. The event challenged me and my group to work efficiently under time pressure in order to deliver a creative and well-thought-out presentation. In addition, the activity also helped my schoolmates and I hone our public speaking skills which is an essential communication tool that can be used in order to have an effective way of reaching out to your market and also raise awareness in dealing with social problems and the proposed solutions.

8. Marketing goes beyond the 4 Ps.

Marketing goes beyond the 4 Ps – Price, Product, Place and Promotion. Marketing is also about establishing a relationship between the consumer and the product or service, that you’re trying to sell. And in doing so, you must think of the most creative and innovative way to capture the market or your audience. MarkEd helped me broaden my ideas, and look beyond the norms. Lastly, MarkEd taught me how marketing can be used in serving the country – this can be done through tourism and boosting nationalism.

7. Attention grabbing strategies by professional marketers.

UP Marked was a great experience and and I’m glad they opened it to high school students because it gave me my first taste of the marketing world. My favorite part was probably working on our marketing strategy, because it really tested how creative I could be. I also particularly enjoyed hearing professional marketers share their projects and seeing the unique attention grabbing strategies they come up with. It was great exposure and I’m happy I attended the seminar this year.

6. Developing creative ways of communicating the appeal of a location

With the different marketing strategies and skills taught to us through the talks and mentorship, we were given the opportunity to apply these in creating a marketing campaign for provinces in the Philippines. The research and effort we put into finding out more about our assigned province allowed us to better develop creative ways of communicating the appeal of the location. MarkEd helped open my eyes to the real beauty of the Philippines, especially in its natural attractions and rich culture.

  • Toni Juan, UP Diliman

5. A brand is an emotion

I not only learned that marketing is solving problems (and gaining a profit simultaneously), but also just realized that brands are all around us. One of lines that shook me is  “A brand is an emotion.” I like the way various speakers make you do an activity then tell you its significance as it strengthens the idea that you need to connect seemingly unrelated ideas to create a breakout.

  • Vanessa Pe, University of Santo Tomas

4. The most important factor of marketing is “relatability”

In MarkEd, I learned that a lot of things I thought were completely irrelevant were actually part of one big thing which was marketing. I guess the most important factor of marketing for me is “relatability” because it ensures an ongoing connection between a seller and a consumer. This was just a small portion of what I learned during the summit and I hope I get to learn more.

3. No matter how thorough your marketing plan is, you will not go anywhere without knowing how to present yourself.

Presentation is one of the most important parts of Marketing. In the highly competitive world of business, the first thing you need to know is how to best capture the attention of your target market, while the actual substance of what it is you are marketing comes second in engaging your audience. No matter how thorough your marketing plan is, you will not go anywhere without knowing how to present yourself.

  • Marianna Barreiro, Saint Pedro Poveda College

2. Confidence is key.

Confidence is key. Because no matter how good your idea is, you won’t be able to convince people if you don’t appear certain about it.

  • Alyana Laddaran, UP Diliman

1. Stepping out of my comfort zone.

MarkEd was more than just the usual educational seminar— we were made to apply the concepts we learned in a cutthroat marketing competition that tested our creativity, knowledge and application of concepts learned throughout the first day. It was such an exciting experience that taught me how to think outside the box while managing my time and sticking to business objectives. It was a good first look into the field of marketing that made me step outside my comfort zone and use the best of my abilities to produce the most creative and feasible possible marketing campaign. Overall it was a fun and educational experience that was perfect for the senior high school or early college student!
