10 Reasons Why Cats are Great Pets
Cat and dog lovers will always find themselves in a friendly debate – who’s a better pet, the needy dog or the aloof cat? Yes, it’s pretty hard to beat the unconditional love topped with lots of wet kisses from a pet dog, but felines are interesting creatures and comparing them to dogs is pretty much like comparing apples to oranges. When you bring a canine into your home, you already have an idea how your pet will behave towards you, but cats are a different story. They are complex creatures and have the tendency to show different personality traits. Your feline friend can easily be very affectionate one minute and detached the next; but one thing’s for sure, having a kitty in your home will never be boring, here are 10 reasons why.
10 Reasons Why Cats are Great Pets
1.) They help you de-stress.
Mae Ilagan wrote an article about how a cat’s purr is therapeutic and true enough, if your furry friend decides to snuggle with you or asks to be petted and starts motoring that sweet vibrating sound, you will immediately feel calm and relaxed. A kitty may not jump around and smother you with wet kisses as soon as you come home, but a cat’s purr is just as amazing.
2.) They’re fun.
OK, taking your cat out on a leash is definitely not the norm and bringing them to beach trips is out of the question, but who says owning a cat isn’t fun? Their little quirks that make them to do silly antics (e.g. their love for boxes and shopping bags, sinks, and high places) make living with them oh-so-amusing.
3.) They’re great company.
For those who are living alone, owning a pet definitely eases those moments of loneliness. For those who are living with a roommate/friend/spouse/lover/family, having a furry friend by your side while your housemate is on a trip or is out and about while you stay in will make your home-alone moments a lot better.
4.) They keep your home bug and mice free.
Cats are hunters by nature. Even if they are enjoying the luxury of living in your home, your domestic cat will never stop hunting. It’s their natural instinct. Good news for cat owners: you won’t have to worry about pesky bugs and mice visiting your home or even worse, living in your home. Your cute feline will make sure that your home is always pest-free, I can assure you that.
5.) They head butt.
Before you start to wonder why it would be a privilege to receive head butts from your cat, head butting or head bunting is actually a kitty’s way of showing you their love. Cats are territorial creatures and since some of their scent glands are located on their foreheads, head bunting allows them to leave their scent on you and mark you as their territory and as part of their family. So yes, it is quite a privilege.
6.) They’re better than your alarm clock.
Another good thing to know about cats, they are creatures of habit. Once you’ve brought a feline into your home, your kitty will know your everyday routine by heart and will create its own routine around it. Your cat will soon know the time you get up for school/work and will wake you up even before your alarm goes off. Having a kitty means never needing to buy an alarm clock.
7.) Their burning curiosity.
No, curiosity didn’t kill the cat, it just makes them more amusing. Curiosity is another feline trait that makes them such a joy to have at home. They will always watch the vacuum cleaner with their big, inquisitive eyes or investigate and try to go inside all of the cupboards in your kitchen, and of course, they will be there peering at the toilet every time it flushes. Quite entertaining.
8.) They bring you presents.
As I mentioned earlier, cats are born hunters and because you are taking care of them and providing them with shelter and food, your kitty will show its appreciation by giving you presents. If you have an outdoor cat, don’t get surprised if your feline brings home dead birds and such. It is a gift for you, so even if it’s pretty gross, show some appreciation for your kitty.
For indoor cat owners, the gifts from your feline may not be as gruesome as dead little animals, but your cat will still find a way to present you with tokens of love. Usually, indoor cats will bring you their cat toys, socks or anything they find lying around the house. So, if you wake up with cat toys on your bed, you know you’re loved by your furry friend.
9.) Their playtime.
Whip out those cat wand toys and laser pointers because kitty playtime isn’t only fun, it’s also a great stress reliever. Watching that furball jump around chasing its toy will immediately turn your frown upside down. It’s quite entertaining for yourself and for your feline but most importantly, your playtime strengthens the bond between you and your cat which gives you physical and emotional benefits such as decrease in blood pressure and cholesterol levels and decrease in feelings of loneliness. It’s a fact.
10.) Their cuteness
You have to admit, cats are pretty darn cute. Having the opportunity to give their soft furry bodies a little squeeze and getting some warm kitty cuddles will always be worth it in the end.
