5. Professor disses “grade conscious” UP students on Facebook

Tiffany Grace Uy

After Tiffany Uy’s impressive 1.004 GWA turned her into an overnight celebrity, a UP professor came under fire for his post on social media that criticized grade-conscious students, particularly from UP, yet do not engage in activities that foster social awareness. Netizens have felt that this post was indirectly referring to Tiffany, because of the timeliness of the post.

The professor later on said that he was not vilifying Tiffany, but to UP students in general who “tend to reduce education to mere achievements and general weighted average”, and that his post was meant to provoke public discourse.

4. Customer fools Jollibee delivery guy

Jay Bee Jollibee

A man claiming to be a doctor from Ateneo posted on social media bragging about how he was able to pay only 66 pesos for his 266-peso Jollibee delivery, after tricking the delivery guy into waiting for 30 minutes more at his condo lobby despite arriving on time.

Obviously, after the post spread, Jay Bee received much hate from netizens. But instead of saying sorry, he posted a follow-up post, thanking his “bashers” for making him more popular and hoped to be featured on Ellen DeGeneres’ show, and raised his middle finger.

3. Torre de Manila “photobomber”

DMCI’s Torre de Manila, a luxury 46-storey condominium being built behind Luneta Park, has been heavily criticized for ruining the skyline behind the monument of national hero Jose Rizal, and has been dubbed as the “Pambansang Photobomb”. Pioneered by the likes of cultural activist Carlos Celdran, the Torre de Manila is said to be obstructing the scenery of the Rizal monument, which should be preserved as it is a heritage site.

After the Supreme Court ordered the cease in construction of the building, we have lawmakers such as Manila Rep. Amado Bagatsing who suggest that the Rizal Monument be moved instead as not to have an obstructed scenery. Uh, thanks.

2. “I would rather go hungry than eat Filipino food”

etramping I would rather go hungry than eat filipino food Philippines

Remember when a pair of Polish bloggers went to the Philippines for a trip, and wrote a blog about how they would rather go hungry than eat Filipino *street* food again? (They even posted a photo of looking for longganisa at a 7-11 but was handed with an American hotdog). You could imagine the brouhaha this caused, especially among Filipino netizens, yet foreigners who have been to the Philippines (Nathan Allen of I Dreamed of This comes to mind), as well as expats based in the country also came to the Philippines’ defense.

1. Yaya meals

Ahh, the yaya meals. Former Miss World Philippines Maggie Wilson-Consunji posted about her experience in an exclusive island resort where they served so-called “yaya meals”, after the resort’s restaurant staff reportedly refused to serve Wilson’s mother the same dish as their nanny had ordered, saying that it was a yaya’s meal.

The exclusive resort of course posted a statement on Facebook, saying that they did not understand the “hullabaloo” about the “yaya’s meals” as they are “deliciously prepared by our chefs, as well, for our operating staff”, and that if guests choose to have the Club serve their nannies lobster thermidor or tenderloin steak, they would gladly serve it.
