Many Filipinos in their mid-twenties and beyond have very vivid memories of the hit telenovela Pangako Sa ‘Yo. Apart from being the first teleserye, it told the intricate stories and love interests of the many characters. It was a hit in the Philippines (there was a power outage when the finale was aired), and it was also aired in Zambia, Thailand, Ghana, China, Malaysia, Indonesia, Kenya, Namibia, Cambodia, Singapore, Botswana, and Cameroon. At a time when teleseryes now are aired for five to six months, Pangako Sa ‘Yo had an impressive two-year run and 486 episodes.

Jericho Rosales and Kristine Hermosa in the original Pangako Sa ‘Yo

The successful teleserye starred Jericho Rosales, Kristine Hermosa, Eula Valdez, Jean Garcia, Tonton Gutierrez, Jestoni Alarcon, and Amy Austria. Eula Valdez and Jean Garcia’s rivalry became so iconic that it became a new standard for the kontrabida role Cherie Gil mastered in Bituing Walang Ningning.

Now, those who weren’t alive during the iconic show’s run from 2000 to 2002 can catch it again, this time with a new cast. For its remake, director Rory B. Quintos (who also directed the original) cast Daniel Padilla and Kathryn Bernardo as the new Jericho and Kristine, and Angelica Panganiban as Jean Garcia’s role of Madame Claudia and Jodi Sta. Maria as Eula Valdez’s role of Amor Powers. Coincidentally, Jodi was also in the original run as Claudia’s daughter.

Today, ABS-CBN launched the trailer of its remake. Describing it as a “teleserye that changed the history of Philippines television,” the remake is a “modern retelling of a great Filipino love story.” Watch the full trailer below:
