This is not a drill: Toy Story 4 is happening!

The news was confirmed when Pixar filmmaker Pete Docter said they were looking for the right story for the film. He told Entertainment Weekly, “It’s hard, because as we get in there, we realize you don’t want this to just be another regurgitation of something we’ve seen. We’ve really plumbed the depths of these characters with Woody and Buzz, so to find something new that hasn’t been done, I feel like we’re onto it now. But it’s taken some real deep investigative work.”

He hinted that it will be a mix of familiar and new. He added, “Again, it brings it to something that you haven’t seen before, which I think is what people want. On the one hand, you like the familiarity, you like these characters, you want to see them again — but if it was the same movie or it felt like, ‘Eh, it was a little bit like ‘Toy Story 2,’ then we’re kind of sunk.”

Pixar chief John Lasseter previously told EW that the fourth installment of the franchise will focus on the relationship between Woody and Bo Peep. Peep disappears, and Woody teams up with Buzz Lightyear to find her. It will also update viewers on what happened to the other toys when Andy gave them to Bonnie in Toy Story 3.

But because of the studio’s insistence on finding a new story, the release date has been pushed back from June 15, 2018 to June 21, 2019.

It will be directed by Lasseter (who directed the first two movies) and Josh Cooley, and will be written by Rashida Jones and Will McCormack, who are both actors and screenwriters. Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, Don Rickles and Laurie Metcalf will reprise their roles of Woody, Buzz Lightyear, Mr. Potato Head, and Andy’s mom.

The first Toy Story premiered in 1995 and enjoyed widespread acclaim, with many critics noting it as one of the greatest animated films ever made. It was nominated for Best Original Screenplay, Best Original Score, and Best Original Song for “You’ve Got a Friend in Me” at the Academy Awards, but won the Special Achievement Academy Award.
