Will New Girl's 7th Season Be its Last?

Who’s that girl? It’s Jess Day, and you’re going to see her for one final season before she says goodbye for good.

Sources say that New Girl‘s upcoming seventh season will be its last. Fox, the network producing it, has not commented on the matter, but Jake Johnson, who plays Nick Miller, confirmed it on Twitter, saying “#NewGirl has been picked up for 8 final episodes! Very excited to be able to finish what we started. Also Happy Mother’s Day, ladies.”

It turns out that the showrunners were preparing for a finale. Executive producer Brett Baer previously told TVLine, “I think it would be really disappointing to have the show go off the air and not give the audience a satisfactory conclusion to a story line that’s been the engine of the show since Season 1.”

Baer is referring to the romance between Jess and Nick.

New Girl premiered in 2011, and followed Zooey Deschanel as Jess, a quirky girl who moves in with three guys with different personalities. There’s Johnson as Nick, a law school dropout who’s working as a bartender; Max Greenfield as Schmidt, a confident womanizer; and Damon Wayans Jr. as Coach, a former athlete turned personal trainer (he was replaced by Lamorne Morris as Winston Bishop, a former basketball player).

It opened to critical acclaim, with critics noting it as one of the best new comedies of 2011. It drew 10.3 million viewers in its premiere, but it dwindled to an average of2.7 million viewers in its sixth season. It is Fox’s longest-running live-action comedy.
