Wicked is Returning to Manila!

Many are familiar with “Defying Gravity,” perhaps the most popular song from the Broadway musical Wicked. The song has been covered many times, by Lea Salonga, Pentatonix, Kerry Ellis, and most famously, by the cast of Glee.

Filipinos were given a special treat in 2014 as the Land of Oz descended on Manila. Now, those who missed the Broadway musical or who still have the green fever can get a chance to hear “Defying Gravity” because Wicked is coming back to the Philippines!

The news was announced by Concertus Manila on Facebook, saying that Wicked is returning to Manila in 2017.

The Facebook post states that the show will open on February 2, 2017, and that a waitlist for the ticket is already available on its page.

Wicked is based on the Gregory Maguire book of the same name, and tells the unlikely story between Elphaba, a lonely witch left out of groups because of her green skin, and Glinda, a popular witch. Elphaba is disillusioned by the corrupt government of the Wizard, and she goes on a quest to stand up against evil. Wicked is set before L. Frank Baum’s book The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, and is supposed to be the “origin story” of the Wicked Witch of the West.

It was adapted to the stage in 2003, directed by Joe Mantello with music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz. The original run starred Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth, and won seven Drama Desk awards, three Tonys, and one Grammy.
