On Monday, Senator Richard “Dick” Gordon suggested in a funny remark that the new tourism slogan should be changed to “Welcome to the PI” or “Wow PI” in light of President Rodrigo Duterte’s expletive-filled remarks that captured international media headlines.
According to a post on GMA News, Sen. Gordon said:
We have to protect the country from bad statements and the President has the duty to be a statesman. He must not be heard saying all bad words.
He added:
Sasabihin ko nga, baguhin na natin ang slogan sa tourism, ‘Welcome to the PI’ or “Wow PI.’ Hopefully, marinig ni Pangulo ito at ‘huy, baka sumusobra na siguro.
(Rough translation: I’ll say, let’s change our tourism slogan to “Welcome to the PI” or “Wow PI.” Hopefully, the president will hear it and say, “I might be going overboard already.”)
Moreover, the former tourism secretary said:
Maingay ang pangulo, sobrang ingay ng pangulo. Tama lang na ipakita niya na galit siya sa droga pero huwag na siyang mag-ingay na ‘I will kill you,’ hindi tama ‘yan.
Kaya he is falling on his own sword, nadadapa siya sa kanyang espada dahil salita siya ng salita, napag-bibintangan tuloy ang bansa na ‘yan ang nangyayari.
(Rough translation: The president is noisy. The president is too noisy. It’s right to show his anger about drugs but he doesn’t have to be noisy and say, “I will kill you,” that’s not right.
That is why he is falling on his own sword. He is falling because of his words. That is why our country is being blamed for what is happening.)
