Gone are the days when the Jeepney dominated the streets and outnumber all vehicles. The new King is the motorcycle.

As of 2009, the number of registered motorcycles is at 3.2 million, which is more than half of all registered vehicles. This includes motorcycles, scooters, and tricycles. Imagine how much more if we count the unregistered motorcycle and scooters.

But why is there a sudden “boom” of motorcycles in the country?

Perhaps the main reason is the price and how motorcycles are sold to the public. In the past, a motorcycle cost between 50 thousand to 80 thousand pesos, the mode of payment is mostly cash or it is financed by a bank or a financing company. Today you can make a down payment of 3500- 4000 and pay monthly installments between 2500 to 3500 pesos for the next 3 years. There are also perks, discounts, and rebates if you pay on time.

The motorcycles or scooters are financed by the dealer so the bank or financing company is taken out of the equation.

Another good reason motorcycles are “booming” is because of fuel efficiency some even have a consumption of 60 kilometers per liter. Not only are they fuel efficient but they are also very maneuverable and you can weave through traffic easily.

Needless to say, motorcycles are ideal for city driving and they daily drive to work and even school. However, because of the alleged riding in tandem issue in Las Pinas and other parts of Cavite, gives other motorists a bad name. Hopefully, they stop killing people like it was a thing to do.
