What to Watch During the 2014 Metro Manila Film Fest

 

The annual Metro Manila Film Fest is something to look forward to by every Filipino family. It has become a Christmas tradition to watch a movie, because the festival officially opens on Christmas day. But because there are a lot to choose from (ranging from comedy to drama and horror), sometimes it can get confusing to choose what to watch.

If you’re wondering what to watch this season, below is the list of recommended films to watch in the 2014 Metro Manila Film Fest. It looks like a promising bunch this year.

 

 

Kalaw (Immy Rempis – Asia Pacific Film Institute)

Set in Puerto Galera, Kalaw deals with a rampant sexual taboo that is still being kept secret. The film follows Monik (Japo Parcero) as she returns to her hometown hoping for a chance at salvation.

Bonifacio: Ang Unang Pangulo (Enzo Williams)

Bonifacio tells the tale of Andres Bonifacio, except this retelling gives a new approach to this story we all grew up with.

A single father kills his young daughter by accident, and he has to deal with his guilt and the challenge of burying her.

Maratabat (Pride and Honor) (Arlyn Dela Cruz)

Set in Maratabat, its people realize that the corrupt political rule of Abubakars has ended. The people clamor for the Mahardikas to govern them, but it’s unclear whether they’ll be peaceful or just as violent as the previous rulers.

M Mother’s Maiden Name follows a successful lawyer as she deals with cancer.

My Big Bossing (Joyce Bernal, Marlon Rivera, Tony Reyes)

Styled like the Shake, Rattle & Roll series that is an MMFF staple, My Big Bossing is divided into three stories, with Ryzza Mae Dizon playing three roles: a mermaid, a ghost, and a princess.

Kubot: The Aswang Chronicles 2 (Erik Matti)

The sequel to the successful Tiktik, Kubot follows the characters from the first (except Lovi Poe) as they fight off aswang to save their family.

Awards: 3rd Best Picture, Best Visual Effects, Best Production Design, Best Makeup, Best Supporting Actor (Joey Marquez) and actress (Lotlot de Leon)

 

 

 

English Only, Please (Dan Villegas) 

The only rom-com in the lineup, English Only, Please is about two heartbroken individuals who meet for a professional job. The girl is tasked with teaching the boy Filipino. As they go through their lessons, the girl realizes she has feelings for the boy.

Awards: 2nd Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor (Derek Ramsey), Best Actress (Jennylyn Mercado), Best Original Story, Best Screenplay, Best Editing
