'Selfie' is the Philippines' Word of the Year 2

The Philippines’ 2014 word of the year is ‘selfie.’ Of course, this is not surprising considering that we are the social media capital of the world, and Makati is the selfie capital of the world.

The term ‘selfie’ was awarded word of the year by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) during Sawikaan 2014, an annual activity that selects the word of the year.

The selection is based on the word that was used the most in the past year.

To prove how the big the selfie phenomenon is in the Philippines, there’s actually a song about selfies called… Selfie Song.

Besides selfie, the other nominees were endo (end of contract), bossing, CCTV, Filipinas, hashtag, imba (imbalanced), kalakal (merchandise), PDAF (Priority Development Assistance Fund, or pork barrel), peg, riding-in-tandem, storm surge, and whistle-blower. The words are a mix of political scandals, natural disasters, and crime, which were big issues in 2014.
