The Miss Universe itinerary that was supposed to include swimming with the whale sharks in Oslob triggered outcry from wildlife conservation groups was scrapped according to Tourism Undersecretary Kat de Castro. Groups including Greenpeace Southeast Asia and Marine Wildlife Watch of the Philippines were quick to call out the practice as irresponsible tourism and detrimental to the whale sharks.
The Miss Universe candidates will have instead their time with endangered species during their visit to Davao on January 19 to see the Philippine Eagle.
