French Macarons are sweet meringue-based treats made from egg whites, icing sugar, granulated sugar, almond powder or ground almond and food coloring. It is commonly filled with ganache, buttercream or jam filling sandwiched between the two cookies.

(Thanks Wikipedia!)

I’ve been macaron-ed for the past weeks and found out how laborious these sweet treats are made and how delicate they are. A chef friend told me a few guidelines on identifying a good macaron. Believe it or not, macarons are very sensitive to temperature and the temperature makes or breaks the macarons. It must be crispy on the outside and chewy on the inside, not overwhelmingly sweet and it should have the perfect aesthetics. Yes, it takes that much to create a good macaron. It takes patience, effort, skills and a lot of love to make them, so hands down to our local macaron-makers! A brand named Laduree in Paris, France and Pierre Herme are well-known for their heavenly macarons and I hope I get to taste one someday (wishful thinking)!

These macarons are definitely not your ordinary cookies or pastries but let me tell you, they can surely make you feel warm and fuzzy inside with just one bite. Macarons are perfect to cheer yourself up or a friend, as a treat for doing a job well done, acing an exam or finishing a task on time or simply just to satisfy your sweet tooth.

Macarons became my instant dose of happiness and I’m sharing with you where to get your macarons fix in the Metro.
