We unboxed the Huawei Mate 20 and here are our first thoughts!

Huawei Mate 20

One of the most exciting devices to come out of the market is the Huawei Mate 20, the brand’s new flagship phone. It boasts an immensely powerful engine with a full vibrant display, complemented by the Leica Triple Camera. We’ve read good reviews on this smartphone and we decided to take it out for a test drive. But first, an unboxing.

The Huawei Mate 20 comes in a sleek black box. Inside is the device, a jelly case, the charger, and the earphones. The items are pretty straightforward, and we definitely appreciate the jelly case since some of us might not be able to buy a case right away for the glass body. Our device is the Midnight Blue variant, a shade that looks both masculine and elegant.

The left side houses the hybrid dual-nano SIM tray, while the right side offers the power/lock button and the volume buttons. In front, you can find the 24MP camera that also enables Face Unlock. A subtle light signals notifications without being obtrusive. Up top are the 3.5mm audio jack and two microphones, with two more at the bottom. Also found at the bottom of the device are the the USB-C port and the loudspeaker.

At the back is the Huawei Mate 20’s crowning glory: the Leica Triple Camera made up of the 12 MP main RGB lens, the 8 MP telephoto lens, and the new 16 MP Leica Ultra Wide Angle Lens. Below the cameras is the fingerprint scanner for easy access.

The Huawei Mate 20 feels substantial in the hands. It’s approximately 188 grams, which means it’s light enough to be carried or used with one hand. Don’t let that fool you. The smartphone packs a punch with its 6.53-inch display and 16.7 million colors. It’s a great device to watch a movie or series and play a mobile game because of the screen-to-body ratio. Our device has a 128GB memory and  6GB of RAM, which makes it the perfect device to play games and store photos and videos.

We’ll talk about the camera further in our in-depth review, but here’s a sample food shot that we took using the Huawei Mate 20. The photo has not been retouched:

So far we love the smartphone because of its camera and the display. It’s the perfect device for taking Instagrammable photos, watching content on Netflix, and playing all sorts of games. We’ll be writing a more in-depth review soon so watch out for that!
