One of the deciding factors when getting a new smartphone is the strength of the camera. As a selfie-obsessed country, we need a phone that can take the perfect selfie and gorgeous landscape shots when we travel. However, we don’t want it to cost too much. Thankfully, brands are coming up with mid-range options that can give us what we need at a good price.
We’re always on the search for good bargains so we decided to check out three new midrange smartphones and see which had the best camera. We tried the Huawei Nova 3i, the Samsung A6+, and the OPPO F9.
Our team went to the University of the Philippines Diliman to conduct a blind photo test using the same subjects, taken using the three phones. They printed out four sets of photos, highlighting its different features: bokeh, AI, landscape mode, and portrait mode. The team then asked 25 people to pick out the most appealing photos.

The Huawei Nova 3i was the clear winner, winning the most votes in three of the four categories: the portrait mode (17 votes), the outdoor AI (12 votes), and the indoor and the low-light shots (18 votes). For the bokeh effect, the OPPO F9 was the landslide winner (15 votes).
Why did the Huawei Nova 3i win? We think it’s because of the four AI cameras that can take effortlessly stunning pictures, anytime of the day. We tried it out and was impressed how it can recognize hundreds of sceneries and automatically adjust the photos settings to create the most vibrant shot possible. All you need to do it point and shoot!
The other phones were good, too. The OPPO F9 has an AI-powered scene recognition camera, advanced beauty technology, and a clean bokeh effect. The Samsung A6+ has various camera modes, a live focus feature that lets its users control the depth of field, and a three-level front flash for a great selfie, whatever the time.
However, they were no match for the Huawei Nova 3i!
Of course, we’re here to talk about the best mid-range phones and the prices do not disappoint. The Huawei Nova 3i is P15,990, the OPPO F9 is P17,990, and the Samsung A6+ is P22,990.
