One of the best parts about living in the Philippines is the diversity of our food. Food is part of our culture that we eat when we’re happy, when we’re sad, when we’re celebrating, or we’re sympathizing. Think about it, most of our social gatherings revolve around food.
Recently, Filipino food has been making the rounds online, and a group of Americans decided to play a little game: Filipino Food or Not? In the game, they are presented with random food items, and they have to identify whether the dish is… Filipino or not.
They are presented with Sweet Corn (Crunchy and sweet corn-flavored balls), tostones (fried plaintain slices), arroz caldo (rice porridge with chicken, usually seasoned with toasted garlic and green onions), lumpia (sauteed vegetables wrapped in thin crepe-like paper), tandoori chicken (roasted chicken marinated in yogurt and fragrant spices), and bibingkang galapong (rice flour pancake made with coconut milk). Out of the entries, only Sweet Corn, arroz caldo, lumpia, and bibingkang galapong are from the Philippines. Tostones is from South America, while tandoori chicken is from India.
Two guys from Buzzfeed were able to answer everything correctly. One girl who tried the bibingka said, “If I had this, I wouldn’t need a boyfriend. Good job in the Philippines. Bring some more of that here.”
However, one said, “I still don’t know what Filipino food is.”
