WATCH: “MAL” (a Unifying Story of Two Opposite Worlds)

 Mal Poster

Mal, an adaptation of Euripides’ “Trojan Women”, written by Palanca Awardee Vladimeir Gonzalez and directed by Jeremy dela Cruz, will be staged on May 9 & 10, 4 P.M. and 7 P.M., at the Makiling Ballroom Hall, Student Union Building, University of the Philippines-Los Baños.

Mal tells a unifying story of two opposite worlds. The “virtual” world is an extreme sensory environment where people are immersed in technology and entertainment. In this world, the play follows a mother as she struggles to remember the traces of a war. In the abusive “real” world, the play follows familiar faces—a student, a mother, a spouse, and a farmer—asthey continue their search.

In both worlds, the play demonstrates the power of memory in the seen and unseen wars of real life, the victims, and victors, as well as the forces behind these wars. It also seeks to help viewers understand a tragic truth in the society that we live in.

The play is produced by students of Theatre classes 107 (Theatre Communication) and 114 (The Dynamics and Aesthetics of Community Theatre), sections YZ and GH respectively.

Mal’s cast includes Loreine San Luis, Dane Afuang, Rinna Razal, Donna Osana, Papat Catriz, Third Alub, Allyssa Herrera, NetNet Esperidion, Julie Echano, Edward Solon, Clinton Ang, MJ Guan, Paola Aguila, Reinier Abagat, Rose Ruiz, Tush Contreras, Krislyn Perdigones, and Kyle Almero.
