WATCH: Filipino Chef’s Surprise Proposal to Girlfriend at Times Square New York

“We’re [an] example of long distance relationships […] proving to everyone that LDR works if you truly love each other faithfully.”

This is one line that stood out from Joseph Ong’s email to me, telling the love story of him and his girlfriend.

They’ve known each other since college, he tells me, but didn’t get together until less than two years ago. It wasn’t an easy relationship; it was long-distance. He lives and works as a chef in New Orleans, and his girlfriend, Zeline Policarpio, is a ground crew of Etihad Airways living and working in Abu Dhabi.  But finally, last July 17th, as Zeline flew to USA to visit family and see Joseph, he popped the question.

With the help of family, Joseph was able to pull off a surprise proposal in no other than the iconic Times Square in New York. As if that trip to the USA wasn’t already special for Zeline as it was a long-awaited reunion not only with Joseph and her family, who is based in New Jersey, it was also her very first trip to the country. And, as we know now, it was also where she would be engaged. What a memorable trip for Zeline it must have been!

But that was the plan, Joseph shares. When he was still courting Zeline, he promised her to make her feel like the luckiest girl in the world. And, obviously, this is a guy who lives up to promises he makes to the love of his life.

Watch the moment of the proposal here (surrounded by cheering tourists and strangers, no less!):

Joseph expressed his gratefulness to the strangers who cheered them on, and even helped in holding up his gold balloons, spelling out Will you marry me?

“It’s just so awesome! We can’t explain that moment! It’s magical,” Joseph tells me.

A massive congratulations to Joseph and Zeline! May your life together be filled with kindness and even more love.
