WATCH: Disney Has a New Short and It’s About a Little Dumpling!

Hooray for Asian representation!

Before the start of The Incredibles 2, Disney Pixar will screen Bao, a short film that tells the story of a Chinese-Canadian mother who gets another chance at motherhood when her children move out. However, it’s not the kind of child she expects. Her new baby is a little dumpling, which comes to life after she makes it.

Watch the teaser below:

Bao is directed by Pixar storyboard artist Domee Shi, who has become the first female short director in Disney Pixar’s history.

She told Entertainment Weekly, “Often times it felt like my mom would treat me like a precious little dumpling, wanting to make sure I was safe, that I didn’t go out late, all that stuff. I just wanted to create this magical, modern-day fairy tale, kind of like a Chinese Gingerbread Man story. The word ‘bao’ actually means two things in Chinese: Said one way, it means steamed bun. Said another, it means something precious. A treasure.”

It’s something we can all look forward to, when The Incredibles 2 premieres on June 15, 2018.
