Urban Ashram Manila: “Flexibility Not Required” Classes for Beginner Yoga Practitioners

When in Manila and a beginner practitioner of yoga, Urban Ashram offers FNR classes where FNR means “Flexibility Not Required.”

It’s a good introductory class, especially for those who aren’t as comfortable doing complex poses yet, and for those who haven’t done yoga in a while—like me. It’s not as intimidating, and it focuses on laying a strong foundation for a safe and more meaningful practice in the future.

Last week, my friend, Kim, and I visited the Urban Ashram studio in Bonifacio High Street. The place is serene, located on the third floor of the Active Fun building. There’s a small section that sells yoga mats, clothing, etc. Their locker rooms and shower area are really clean, where they can provide you with locker keys, a towel (which you can rent), and lemongrass shampoo and soap, which smell amazing.

The FNR class was really perfect for Kim and I, because I haven’t done yoga in months while she does yoga at home every now and then. Out of all the yoga practices I’ve done, this was the first time I’ve tried one that really centered on correct form and foundation.

It concentrated a lot on leg strengthening and core stability. But it’s not as easy as it sounds, because the poses can still be challenging. We had to do a good number of planks throughout the session.

Aside from FNR, Urban Ashram also offers Vinyasa Flow (which helps you become aware of your breathing), Hatha (sequences that focus on alignment), Pranayama and Meditation (which focuses on breathwork and helps relieve stress), Kundalini (which consists of simple yet comprehensive techniques), Fertility Yoga (an integrative approach for enhancing the wellbeing and health of women), and Kids Yoga.

If you’re looking to feel your best physically, emotionally and psychologically, a consistent yoga practice will definitely do the trick. Visit Urban Ashram’s studios, with branches in High Street and Brixton.
