Seeing Double: Twins Graduate Cum Laude at the UST College of Nursing

Article by Corrine and Catherine Reyes.

The four-year journey in UST College of Nursing is a toughie, but having a twin can make a journey turn from what used to be a horror house experience into a fun-filled rollercoaster ride. In fact, having a twin as a study buddy has been a great advantage for us. We have built our smooth relationship dynamics through time; but even though what we have is not perfect, we will not exchange anything for what we have now. We are each other’s quality control by being each other’s biggest advocates and biggest cheerleaders. We have a very good support system composed of our friends, families and, most importantly, our parents. Having each other by our side through the thick and thin of our college days, the Latin honor seemed as a reachable dream and a goal rather than an asa-ka-pa fantasy. We stood out from the 347 UST Nursing students, and belonged to the 10 outstanding students with Latin honors: Catherine being the 5th and Corrine being the 7th.

Although college is a competitive environment, we managed to get through by being flexible and by embracing our uniqueness. We made sure that we used things to our advantage, such as having a trustworthy best friend/ twin by your side, in our case seatmate/ thesis mate/ group mate/ partner. We saw to it that we faced every challenge in college in a positive, objective, sharp and respectful manner. Though we are competitive in nature, we never try to outdo each other in any way. We credit each other’s every success and seek for feedback for improvements.

Furthermore, our parents tried their best not to make any comparison and have always made sure that we feel good about ourselves. Moreover, our parents make it sure to maintain a supportive environment, such as providing our own study room, buying useful gadgets, and cooking us soup during our sleepless nights. We talk to our parents as a stress reliever. It is in fact the time when our parents gently channel our minds to the right perspective. Even though our daddy is an OFW, we will not let a day slip without talking to our dad in skype or in phone about our day. His sacrifice to work abroad makes us realize that we have to strive hard for our future and most importantly, to make them proud of us.

Our most vivid and intense feelings tend to come out when we talk about our parents. They are the reason for all of our achievements and we cannot be more grateful. We couldn’t have done this without our parents who not only understood us the most, but also appreciated our potential to lead us toward a better future.

We hope that you find someone with pure intentions who will stay by your side and understand you to make you the best version of yourself, as well.
