YouTube: 2013 was officially the year of Scandinavia.
Each year YouTube celebrates the top trending videos, music videos and channels, called YouTube Rewind. These aren’t accidental viral videos, they’re videos from channels with millions of subscribers that turned into pop culture moments.
In 2012, Psy won YouTube and put South Korean music (K-Pop) on the map. This year, Scandanavia is the clear winner of YouTube with three major players in our annual YouTube Rewind:
– Ylvis, the Norwegian comedy duo behind “What does the fox say?” took the #1 top trending video for 2013
– Of all the Harlem Shake videos this year, the Norwegian Army danced away with the most views, earning the #2 spot for top trending videos in 2013
– PewDiePie became the #1 most subscribed channel on YouTube with more than 16 million subscribers
While YouTube viewers fell in love with Scandinavia this year, it’s not a surprise that more international content is finding huge popularity on YouTube. Now more than 80% of views come from outside the US.
In the Philippines, our viewing experience on YouTube were defined by the Kiyomi craze, breaking news, and some silly Memes.
