Who is the funniest person in the world? It’s hard to tell, right? What may be funny for me may not be funny for you, but there’s actually a global contest that aims to award the most hilarious person in the world. And comedian Tim Tayag may represent the Philippines in this competition.
To compete, Tayag must face-off with fellow Filipino Alex Calleja. Whoever wins will be the country’s representative against other countries’ winners.
According to Laugh Factory, “Laughter brings people closer, succeeding where diplomacy, democracy, and religion have failed. It is a universal language. This event highlights an alternative ambassador — the kind that brings diplomacy through a belly laugh.”
A total of 88 comedians from 55 countries have joined this year’s competition. The top 20 will join the finals in Helsinki, Finland. Whoever will be crowned the Funniest Person in the World will win $100,000 (roughly P4,733,550), and the chance to bring peace through laughter. It certainly would be an honor, as Laugh Factory is considered as “the #1 comedy club in the USA,” and has given stage time for comedians such as Nick Cannon, Jim Carrey, Ellen DeGeneres, Jay Leno, David Letterman, Eddie Murphy, Chris Rock, Adam Sandler, the Wayans Brothers, Robin Williams, and many more.
Tayag has been doing comedy for almost 20 years now, making people laugh from all walks of life. He has also helped in creating a proper standup comedy scene here in the Philippines not only as a performer but as a mentor to other aspiring comedians. Tayag has performed in the Philippines, USA, Hong Kong, and Qatar, where he covers his experiences from growing up in the Philippines, living in the States, and the absurd things he finds every day.
