Thor: Ragnarok Director Will Play Korg in the Film

Thor- Ragnarok Director Will Play Korg in the Film

We’re used to former Marvel president and chairman Stan Lee playing cameo roles in Marvel films that we don’t really think much of it. But it’s a completely different ball game when someone who’s traditionally behind the scenes will appear in front of a camera… with a good role. That’s what will happen in Thor: Ragnarok, where director Taika Waititi will play Korg, an eight foot tall rock creature.

The role was supposed to go to someone like Dwayne Johnson, but Waititi joked that “there wasn’t enough chicken or salmon in Australia to sustain he and Chris [Hemsworth].”

Korg is a rock creature from the Planet Hulk storyline, and will be Thor’s friend in the upcoming film.

This isn’t the first time Waititi has played roles in films. Previously, he played Thomas Kalmaku in Green Lantern, and roles in his films Eagle vs. Shark, Boy, What We Do in the Shadows, and Hunt for the Wilderpeople.

Korg is part of the Kronan race, a semi-humanoid race also known as “the Stone Men of Saturn.” They first appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) in the opening of Thor: The Dark World, when the titular hero took them down.

However, Korg and Thor will play buddies in Thor: Ragnarok, where Thor is imprisoned without his hammer Mjolnir, and must survive a gladiatorial duel against Bruce Banner as the Hulk. The hero must also stop Ragnarok, an important event in Norse mythology that narrates the death of gods and the submergence of the world in water.

Thor: Ragnarok will premiere on November 3, 2017.
