Netflix to stop charging subscribers who never watch

Streaming platform Netflix announced that they will stop charging subscribers who have never watched for a year.

This is according to a blog posted by Eddy Wu, the company’s product innovation chief.

“You know that sinking feeling when you realize you signed up for something but haven’t used it in ages,” Wu wrote in the post. “At Netflix, the last thing we want is people paying for something they’re not using.”

Apparently, there is a significant number of subscribers who have fallen in the “inactive” category. These subscribers still pay for fees but haven’t watched anything on the platform. The streaming service will soon start canceling these subscriptions.

They aim to help make it easier to cancel for subscribers who never watch or to members who forgot that they are still subscribed but never use the service.

The company said notifications will be sent to subscribers who signed up with a credit card or other payment method, but haven’t watched anything in the year since signing up.

The same thing will be done for subscribers who have been paying for it but haven’t used it in the past two years.

Subscribers whose accounts are dormant will receive a notification asking them if they want to continue with the service. Those who will not reply will automatically have their accounts canceled.

Affected subscribers will receive a warning via email before their accounts are deactivated. Notifications will start arriving this week.

“We’re asking everyone who has not watched anything on Netflix for a year since they joined to confirm they want to keep their membership,” Wu added.

The company will retain viewing data from deactivated accounts, so if a customer wants to re-subscribe at a later date they will be able to access their individualized preferences.
