We all have fond memories of libraries. That’s where we discovered the world, learned stories, and did our assignments at the last minute. But with the world and its stories at the click of our fingertips and last-minute assignments hastily-finished with copy-paste, where does the library stand? For WTA Design Studios, it’s about repurposing it by bringing it straight to the people. And guess what? Their effort, called the Book Stop Project, has been nominated at the World Architecture Festival!
According to WTA, the Book Stop Project is a “network of mobile spaces spread across the city each with garnering far more foot traffic than the typical library.” There, visitors can give/get a book, enjoy reading, share ideas, and express themselves in the available chalkboard. It’s a pop-up public library with a distinct and futuristic design made of expanded wire mesh, a clever contrast against the old-school book. Since it launched, it has appeared in the Ayala Triangle and Intramuros.
The project is nominated under the Small Projects category of the World Architecture Awards, an award-giving body where the world architecture community meets to celebrate, learn, exchange, and be inspired. The website says that it is “the only architecture event where keynote talks from the industry’s most influential figures sit alongside live crit presentations and judging of over 350 award finalists, global networking, a 400 project strong gallery and an international product exhibition.”
The WAA website also says that winners can enjoy global recognition, and will join other renowned winners like Zaha Hadid Architects and Foster + Partners.
The Book Stop Project is competing against entries from Vietnam, Italy, Australia, Tanzania, Estonia, Russia, Sweden, and Hong Kong.
The WAA will take place on the 16 – 18 November in Berlin, Germany.
