The Cyber Crime Law Seminar at San Beda College

When in manila, be sure to know the laws that are being implemented by the government. It is always best to be educated with these things.

We usually put a negative reaction towards rules.  That is because most of it hinder us  from freedom to do what we want right? But have we ever thought why laws were being created? They are not there just to annoy us .  Laws create discipline and to make us more responsible.  It makes us become good citizens. This is just me looking on the brighter side of things.

One law that created a stir within the country is the RA 10175-The Cyber Crime Law

How come many of us reacted quite differently regarding this law?

There are so many reasons to discuss but only one major thing I know of,  It’s because all Filipinos love the internet.

The Internet is the number one leading major source of communication today.

The purpose of the forum  held in San Beda College last Wednesday was for students to get a better picture and a clearer understanding of the law itself.

I learned a lot of things during the event  The Cyber Crime  Law as I’ve come to understand, isn’t so bad after all.  Speakers Attorney Michelle Dy ( who was sent by Senator Angara to deliver a speech on behalf of him), NBI special  crime investigator Joey Narciso,  who specializes in ICT related offenses and cyber crimes, and Jose Angelo David, a graduate of UP Diliman and is currently a 3rd year law student at San Beda College, was able to discuss and gave a better understanding of it’s intentions.

Attorney Michelle Dy read a speech made by Senator Angara. to explain that the main purpose of the RA 10175 is to protect the internet users from hackers, fraud identity thefts, libels and such.

Unbelievable. If hackers could jeopardize information from NBI, Pag Ibig, SSS and other government  institutions then it’s our fellow countrymen who will suffer. It’s our private information stored to most of their databases so don’t you think it’s quite alarming?

A survey was conducted  about the Cyber crimes occuring everyday.

87 % of Filipino internet users have been victims.

NBI Investigator Joey Narciso educated the students how important it is to be aware of the things we post and information we released via the internet.

He discussed about the three major offenses such as content related offenses, cyber sex or child pornography, and cyber defamation or cyber threats.

Our third speaker Jose Angelo David, who’s currently a third year Law student of San Beda College  discussed about freedom of speech.  For me,  freedom of speech gives us the right to voice out your opinions. You share ideas and information and willingly  disclose it without hesitancy.  And this is as  per Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Though there are some instances where freedom of speech are being used carelessly. We used it to hurt someone, to create commotions which could lead to scandals and controversy. That’s why there are a lot of Libel cases especially in the media and entertainment industry.

Now, what’s your two cents regarding the RA 10175?

Is it really Democracy or Democrazy?
