The Awakening World Tour: James Morrison Live in Manila on October 9!

When In Manila, get ready to sing your hearts out with English singer-songwriter and guitarist, James Morrison as he invades Manila for the first time as part of his “The Awakening World Tour” on October 9, 2012 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum

James Morrison did give the world something when he released his single “You Give Me Something” in 2006. Also in the same year, he became the biggest-selling British solo male artist for his first album, Undiscovered. His hits “Wonderful World” (which is one of my favorites) and “The Pieces Don’t Fit Anymore” were award-winning tracks from the same album.

Come 2008, his second album “Songs for You, Truths for Me” also became a hit. His songs “You Make It Real” and the very heart-breaking duet with Nelly Furtado, “Broken Strings” made it on the Top Ten UK Singles Chart.

James Morrison made his comeback last year with “The Awakening” album. I have went through the entire album and I should say that I like what I hear. My favorites so far are, “I Won’t Let You Go” and “Up” that features Jessie J. There is something about James Morrison‘s voice that gives his song a lot of emotions.

The Awakening is a warm, live-sounding collection of classic but contemporary folk-soul songs. There are musical similarities with Morrison’s debut, but with added panache and self-belief. There are soaring strings, uplifting harmonies, soulful ballads and, in Slave to the Music, a hand-clapping dance floor groover – a new string to his bow. There are nods to Motown, gospel, country and a hint of Latin. Technically, Morrison remains one of the finest white soul singers, equal parts Stevie Wonder and Paul Young. But he is more than just a Big Voice – he sings from the heart. “To me, pop music is just great music that lasts for years,” he says. “Though there is the other side of pop, which is where you have a hit, but then, after it comes out, it never gets heard again. I never wanted to make that sort of music.”

Manila is lucky to be part of James Morrison’s The Awakening World Tour as this album speaks so much of his personal life — becoming a father and losing his own father due to alcoholism and depression. All his emotions were channeled to this album making it his most accomplished so far.

The Awakening is full of raw emotion, but these are not “downer songs”, says Morrison. “Yes, some of it’s about dealing with shit – but it’s also about looking at yourself and what you’ve got around you, and weighing stuff up to keep yourself thinking positively. I think a lot of people will be able to relate to that, because that’s what life’s like, what relationships are like.”

I do love the whole concept and the songs from The Awakening album but here’s to hoping that he’ll sing his earlier hits like You Give Me Something, Wonderful World and Broken Strings (this song meant so much to me when I got my heart broken, haha!). I am really looking to watch this concert and hear him perform on stage because I bet he sounds so much better live! Hope to see you there!
