When in Manila, be sure to catch the PHILIPPINE SKA FESTIVAL, the first ever gathering of the best SKA bands in the country, with special guests from Korea, in one musical event!

 

SKA music, a kind of happy dance music that originated from Jamaica, is quite popular throughout the world, including the Philippines. It has been popularized in three waves by bands such as The Skatalites, The Specials, Hepcat, and so on. What is good about this music is that anyone can appreciate it, thus making it an effective bridge connecting different regions, age groups, and musical affiliations.

 

As a background, ska music has enjoyed a healthy following among Filipinos since Put3Ska broke the mainstream musical mold with their first hit album in 1994. Since the release of their groundbreaking album, three generations of musicians and artists have exponentially grown due to their efforts, including those from Bulacan, Baguio, Tarlac, Pampanga, Metro Manila, Bicol, Cebu, Bacolod, Iligan, Davao, and Cagayan de Oro.

 

So popular is the music in our country that we have already held two successful Manila Ska Festivals last July 24-25, 2009 and September 4, 2010, with combined audience attendance of 3000. The group has also produced an album called SKA City United, featuring ska bands from Luzon , Visayas, and Mindanao. PiliSKApinas, a collective group of artists who also serve as the organizers of the event, are at the forefront as part of the growth of this musical movement. It has been organizing gigs throughout the metro since 2005, with the aim of providing artists and musicians venues, in which to share the music. 

 

This year, in cooperation with Cosmosis Talent and Event Management and Skanky Vibes Productions, Cebu, PiliSKApinas has invited top Korean Band, Kingston Rudieska, as part of its continuing efforts to bridge different cultures through music, this time on an international scale. 

 

This December, the Philippine Ska Festival will kick off with a press conference to be held on December 7, 2012, 2PM at the Korean Cultural Center in the Philippines, BGC, Taguig. The schedule of musical events are as follows:
