Vintage is In: Jugo Modern Diner

There’s something overly quintessential with the soda pop diner culture of the 1950’s with its retro outfitting, glaring neon lights, and sleek lines. Throw in a dose of witty puns and old movie posters on the walls and you’ve got an American recipe for the teeming collegian crowd of Katipunan.

Jugo mixes in a sense of contemporary to the overall vintage feel of the place, including a local dash of flavor into the iconic selection of the well-loved American diner.

Jars of chocolates and biscuits line the counter which can be purchased separately or added into their milkshakes. Made from thick soft-served ice cream, their delicious creations are large enough for two with flavors that range from Blueberry, Brownie Fudge, to more outrageous ones like Bacon Overload. Not too sweet on the palate, their milkshakes are priced well within a student’s budget at just Php 105.

What’s a diner without the burgers? Here’s a Mr. Unpredictable whose secret sauce is as unpredictable as its moniker. Two thick patties, cheese, lettuce, tomato, mayo, and mustard all sandwiched in between buns and slathered with Jugo’s secret sauce (Php 350).

Chicken in a Basket comes in three, six, and nines, and is Jugo Bar’s creative version of the classic chicken tendersCreative because it sports unlikely flavors like Chili Chocolate Chicken. The ones we tasted were the Garlic Parmesan Chicken with Bleu Cheese Dip which is a delight for cheese lovers (Php 120 for 3, Php 200 for 6, either with rice or fries).

The Keanu Ribs is a show stopper. A slab of rib is grilled through and then poured with a semi-sweet cola glaze which is then served with a side of rice and sliced tomatoes and cucumbers (Php 280).

A great item for sharing with your barkada is Jugo’s Basket of Fries. With an assortment of all kinds of wonderful fried potato goods including French Fries, Potato Wedges, Mojos, and the very nostalgic Criss-Cut Fries (Php 160).

The Works. Because when you can have all-day breakfast, you want the works on a plate. A power meal to kick start your day with a waffle, a hashbrown, 2 fried eggs, 2 pieces of bacon, a Hungarian sausage, and, of course, a ball of butter and good ol’ maple syrup.

Deep Fried Chicken Skin in Buffalo Sauce and a side of fries. The classic chicken skin of Filipino street food meets American fare. Other flavors include Honey, Sesame, and Garlic Parmesan (Php 110).

Here’s a surprise from the adjacent cafe and juice bar, MindBodySoul. A simple and healthy Black Olives Pasta perfect for Lent or pescetarians.

MindBodySoul has a nook with books and games that customers (yes, even from Jugo) can indulge in for hours.

And kudos to a very accommodating and lighthearted staff who are always smiling about and very easy to talk to. These people are a huge part of the reason why we’ll be back at Jugo Modern Diner.
