Thiefie (Thief Selfie): Selfies Taken by Thieves Who Steal Phones or Gadgets UPDATE

If you haven’t heard, a good friend of mine got her phone stolen, while volunteering at the Villamor Airbase, helping relief efforts for the survivors of the super typhoon Yolanda / Haiyan.

She noticed a guy lurking around their area but paid no attention to it. Later on, her phone, wallet and belongings were gone. A few days later, she sees “Thiefies” ( A thiefie is a selfie taken by thieves who steal phones or gadgets) on her Dropbox account as the thief took selfies of himself on the missing phone, not knowing it would automatically upload to my friend’s linked account. Moreover, the first photos were taken around the time her phone was stolen.

Original story here – https://www.wheninmanila.com/thief-steals-from-volunteers-helping-typhoon-victims-unknowingly-uploads-selfies-to-the-internet/

Fortunately, our friends from traditional media picked up on this story and gave WhenInManila.com a call. ABSCBN called us and we immediately directed them to the victim and they aired her story.

After this, the #Thiefie guy came forward to say…. that he didn’t steal it, and that he just found the phone. You heard it: he just found the phone. The same phone he used to take selfies with. (a certain Shaggy song is playing in my head right now)

So all good right? Now he can just return the phone and clear his name…. but wait… there’s more! Apparently, this guy, who had all intentions of returning the phone he found (despite not calling anyone or informing anyone on the contacts list), is also a victim as he too got robbed and thus, does not have the phone anymore.

Thiefie guy says that he is not able to return the phone as it was stolen from him too.

Oh poor Thiefie guy.

So other than having the phone for days, not turning it in to proper authorities, and not attempting to contact anyone on the contact list, Thiefie guy says that he was planning to return the phone… Moreover, in the video, he says that he’s not a technology expert and thus, did not know how to use the phone, despite clearly knowing how to take selfies.

In all seriousness though, I just don’t understand how someone would take a whole bunch of selfies, not just one, A LOT of selfies, on a phone that isn’t his, and not inform anyone that he” found” the phone. Based on the photos as well from drop box, Thiefie guy also had the phone for some time as he had many different outfit changes. All that time, and not a single call or text to anyone on the phone that he found it? Or any report to any authorities, especially at the Villamor Airbase itself?

We are calling on this Thiefie guy to air his side of the story. We would love to interview him and get his full side of the story, plus maybe take a selfie with him.
