Spud Buds: Your Homegrown Potato Buddy

Spud Buds

Potato chips, one of the most beloved and dominant food snack around the world. So popular that it owns 35% of the global $46 billion snack food industry. But did you know that we have our own home grown artisan potato chip?

Spud Buds is the brainchild of two best friends in a effort to promote and uplift the lives of Benguet farmers with a “mission to advocate the potato varieties we have in the Philippines.” Forty-six billion dollars is a stretch, but at least some of our farmers are getting a part of that pie.

Each crisp is handcrafted and done from scratch from potatoes sourced from Benguet, so every bite is different compared to other packaged and imported potato snacks from around the world. With the help of Benguet State University’s Northern Philippine Root Crops Research and Training Center (NPRCRTC), Spud Buds became a strong advocate of local potato varieties namely Granola, Igorota, Cawhite, Ganza, Solinao, Raniag, and so much more!

I got to spend a weekend with some of their products, and off the bat I could taste that the potatoes used here are not the same as other potato-based snack items we are used to. Spud Buds’ potato chips are crunchier and a bit sweeter which caters to most Filipinos’ tastes.

But what I liked the most were the Chocolate Potato Chips (PHP 200). They were crunchy, salty, and sweet all at the same time. As all chocolate lovers know, salt intensifies the body’s ability to taste sweetness, which means the more chocolatey this was in every bite, the better it tasted! Oh, and do refrigerate them since chocolate and warm weather don’t really go together.

Fun fact: Potato chips were never patented!

How about the Shoestring Potatoes? All I can say is that they are the perfect travel companion. Especially when stuck in traffic! Another good news, you can also enjoy these while watching the latest flicks at the following cinemas: Ayala Malls the 30th, Powerplant Cinema, Promenade Cinema, Ayala’s UP Town Center, Trinoma, and Greenbelt 3!
