It’s confirmed: Sex and the City is going to get a follow-up tv series. We all thought we’d seen the last of Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte and Miranda but it seems author Candice Bushnell isn’t done with them quite yet. In the sequel, Bushnell answers the question: ‘Is There Still Sex in The City?’
It is set to follow the 4 friends as they enter their 50’s and 60’s, marking the group as ‘older’ women. Aside from their age, not much else changes — the focus is still on friendships, dating, relationships, and of course, sex. After all, Bushnell’s goal is to show that, yes, there is still sex in the city no matter what age you are.
She explained to Deadline in an interview:
It didn’t used to be this way. At one time, 50-something meant the beginning of retirement—working less, spending more time on your hobbies, with your friends, who like you were sliding into a more leisurely lifestyle. In short, retirement age folks weren’t meant to do much of anything but get older and a bit heavier. They weren’t expected to exercise, start new business ventures, move to a different state, have casual sex with strangers, and start all over again.
But this is exactly what the lives of a lot of 50 and 60-something women look like today and I’m thrilled to be reflecting the rich, complexity of their reality on the page and now on the screen.”

The follow up novel will be out in August 2019. The rights to a television adaptation have already been bought by Paramount Television and Anonymous Content. There is no timeline for the show’s production as of yet, but Bushnell has already confirmed to be penning the pilot and executive producing the show.
