Dream of studying in Korea? Then this scholarship program might be for you. In an online forum held on February 25, 2021, the Global Korea Scholarship (GKS)’s alumni association shared that Filipino graduate students now have the opportunity to go to South Korea and study there for free! Korea’s National Institute for International Education Development (NIIED) will also be shouldering the students’ accommodation during their mandatory pandemic isolation upon arrival. COVID-19 testing upon arrival will also be provided free of charge.
The Embassy of the Republic of Korea has also announced that their Ministry of Justice “exceptionally allowed” issuing student visas for GKS students accepted last year and will process the student visa applications for this year’s applicants.
GKS is designed to provide international students with opportunities to study at higher educational institutions in Korea at graduate-level degrees, which will enhance international education exchange and deepen mutual friendship between Korea and participating countries. The program hopes to invite 1,278 students from all over the world who want to pursue a graduate level degree or research in South Korea.
There are 28 slots under the University track program for the Philippines and 13 slots for the Embassy track. If you want to teach Korean or enhance your training in Korean, you may also opt for postdoctoral research.
Once accepted, they advise studying Korean there for a year in order to pass the required Test of Proficiency in Korean Language (TOPIK) Level 3 for your chosen master’s or doctorate degree. If you fail the TOPIK Level 3, you might be sent home.
