Brotzeit: The Perfect Restaurant in Manila Amidst the Hustle and Bustle

Brotzeit: The Perfect Restaurant in Manila Amidst the Hustle and Bustle

When In Manila and looking for German food, you really don’t need to look far because amid the commercial area of Mandaluyong-Ortigas is one of the best German restaurants you could try in the Metro: Brotzeit!

Brotzeit Exterior

BROTZEIT German Bier Bar and Restaurant first opened its doors in Singapore in 1996 and with their aim of taking their restaurant to a bigger market, they opened their 10th branch in the Philippines. Located near the business district, Brotzeit offers a wide array of food and drinks to cater to all ages and tastes.

Brotzeit Entrance

The interiors of Brotzeit consist of wood and leather depicting contemporary German design. The murals are interpretations of how beer is brewed and animals (party animals) enjoy beer.

It’s never too early for beer, so let’s start with beer. Bier or Beer is one of the house specialties of Brotzeit. They have a selection of beer in different sizes depending on how you like yours.

We ordered the Bayrischer Longdrink, which is Original Münchner Dunkel Lager with vodka and lime juice. This is perfect for those who like flavoured beer. While it doesn’t have that bitter beer taste, it still has a kick to it.

We also tried one of their bestsellers, the Original Münchner Dunkel Lager which is very similar to caramel beer. It is characterized by its ruby brown color because of its caramel malts, which make it less bitter and a little sweeter.

Another one of the favorite drinks on the menu is the mojito. Their mojito tastes a little tamer than the other ones I’ve tasted. It’s not too strong, and the lime juice is not overpowering, either.

Aside from the very popular Oktoberfest, Brotzeit also celebrates the Struttgard Spring Festival, which is held at the end of April until the beginning of May to welcome the season of spring.

During these special occasions, Brotzeit Culinary Director Chef Ivan Maminta explores opportunities of making special menus to match them. For Struttgard, there is the May Festival Platter and When In Manila was one of the first few to try it. It isn’t actually available until May!

The platter is basically a combination of mouthwatering meat specialties that are both hearty and refreshing. It consists of 2 HUGE pork chops, skewers, sausages, potato salad and sautéed mixed vegetables. Brotzeit platters is good for sharing for 4-6pax and is perfect to match with beer!

Brotzeit May Festival Platter

When I said HUGE, I really meant it. The pork chops measure about 7-9 inches and are really thick. If you like lean meat, you would like to eat the bigger part of the chop, which is cooked thoroughly; tender and juicy.

Next on the platter are the skewers, which are cooked thoroughly and the olive of which adds some saltiness to every bite.

Brotzeit Skewers

What is a German meal without sausages? Sausages or wurst are bestsellers at Brotzeit and with this platter, you can taste five of their best flavors.

According to Chef Ivan, they consume more than one thousand kilos of Kasekrainer (Pork Cheese) in a year. They also have other sausage varierties like Nurnberger (grilled pork), Knoblauchwurst (garlic pork), Hühnerwurst (spicy chicken) and Bockwurst (Smoked pork).

Brotzeit Sausages

The pork chops and skewers are exclusively available in Brotzeit Philippines and most of their raw ingredients are locally sourced.

However, if you are looking for a healthier alternative, Brotzeit also offers lunch specials like the Laugensterl mit Lachs (Smoked Salmon, lettuce, sour cream and chives in home baked Brezn served with pommes).
