“Rick and Morty” Is Getting an Anime Series

Yep, it’s true: cult television cartoon “Rick and Morty” is getting an anime spin-off series.

To be helmed by “Tower of God” director Takashi Sano, “Rick and Morty: The Anime” will serve as a completely standalone show featuring a totally unique story, though it’ll most likely be influenced by canon events. Think “multiverse,” where we’re following the adventures of an alternate version of a crazed inventor and his grandson.

Fans of the original show have nothing to worry about, though, as Director Sano has already had experience working with the fictional world created by Justin Roiland with anime shorts “Rick and Morty vs. Genocider” and “Summer Meets God (Rick Meets Evil)” both of which have amassed 10 million views combined across all of Adult Swim’s digital platforms.

“The multiverse-straddling exploits of Rick and the gang pose challenges to the family bond, but they always rise to the occasion,” said Director Sano in a statement. “It’s such a life-affirming sight, and Jerry is no exception. I am honored to have been given an opportunity to tell a new story about this amazing family. I hope you enjoy their adventures!”

“Rick and Morty: The Anime” will have 10 episodes and is scheduled to premiere in 2023.
