Priscilla Queen of the Desert: Experience the Rainbow Without the Rain

Priscilla Queen of the Desert: Experience the Rainbow Without the Rain

You probably are frowning because of the insane heat in Manila right now. Plus, it’s totally frustrating threading the day with sweat and grimace. However, that still wouldn’t be a reason for you to give in to the “seasonal” fad. Refresh your summer with laughter and some rainbows without the rain by watching “Priscilla Queen of the Desert” at the country’s one-stop and non-stop place of entertainment, Resorts World Manila, which has brought us great hits, like Cinderella, The Sound of Music, and The King and I.

Based on the smash hit movie, Priscilla Queen of the Desert is the heart-warming yet flamboyantly entertaining musical about the adventures of three drag artists who hit the road on a battered old bus as they go on a journey of love and friendship, where they end up finding more than they could have ever dreamed of.

The trademark symbol of Priscilla the musical.

3 reasons why Priscilla Queen of the Desert is a Must-Watch:

Revival of classic songs in new light and flavor.

As a ‘90s kid, I grew up with the groovy hits of Rihanna, Beyonce, Shakira, Miley Cyrus, and Katy Perry, to name a few. However, watching Priscilla Queen of the Desert brought me back to my parents’ younger days and the music that they jived to. I couldn’t help but get an LSS and mentally dance to the songs like ‘I Love the Nightlife’, ‘I Say a Little Prayer’, ‘Boogie Wonderland’, ‘Venus’, ‘Hot Stuff’, and ‘Shake Your Groove Thing’, all of which were world-class renditions in a new light and flavor. What I mean by that is that their renditions of songs had a flamboyant tinge of fuchsia and a sting of margarita in one. Can you imagine how it looks/tastes like?

Personally, I never liked the song ‘True Colors’ by Cyndi Lauper. I never bothered to digest the meaning of its lyrics, either. However, when it was sung in the musical, it made me realize how the song resonates of hope in the LGBT community. Indeed, a heart-warming part of the musical.

The gay agenda: from then to now.

The LGBT theme wasn’t so mainstream way back in 1994 when the movie “The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert” was made. Being an LGBT advocate, I was amazed by the positive portrayal of the movie (which is now a musical) for the minority group, especially for drag queens. We have already gone far in pushing our advocacy for equality for the LGBT community. It just goes to show that we have succeeded at making a big stride of our gay agenda from the scorching scrutiny in Priscilla’s desert then to the oasis of hope now. It really made me even more proud to be gay.

The production features a powerhouse cast with Leo Tavarro Valdez, Jon Santos and Red Concepcion in lead roles.

Eye-opener for racism and sexism.

At a closer look, the musical Priscilla; Queen of the Desert is also akin with the present situation of Filipinos as a race and Filipinos as gays. The only difference now is that gays are no longer as “loud and proud” as they were 10 years ago or those that we call ‘baklang parlor‘, unlike the present standards of gay men as muscled, metrosexual and vain that are so obviously portrayed in shows like Showtime’s “I Am Pogay” or let’s just call them “pahminta.” Obviously, it is an untapped topic that we have yet to discuss.

Also, you will get to experience one of the highlights (probably because it is a funny eye-opener to what other people are thinking of Filipinos as a race) of the show through Cynthia, Filipina, who has a hidden talent. Watch the musical to find out what it is!
