Several paintings by celebrated leaf artist Yel Cast will be dedicated to helping Marawi’s children. One hundred percent of the proceeds from the sale of five paintings will be used to support WheninManila.com’s campaign to send relief goods to children in the evacuation centers in Lanao del Sur. Yel says he aims to raise 100,000 pesos for this cause. He has dedicated 10 other paintings for various causes involving children.
Yel Cast is a self-taught artist whose works have been showcased in numerous art exhibits. Most of his works are abstracts expressing gratefulness, love of life, positive changes, freedom, and dreams without limits. His works can easily be distinguished by colorful and texturized real-leaf patterns.
His love for art began in childhood when he sketched plants and animals in his father’s farm in Batangas. Due to financial and time constraints, he was not able to pursue Fine Arts in College. He became an Electrical Engineer instead, placing first in the Registered Master Electrician Board Exams in 2007.
It was in 2010 when he joined the Metrobank Art and Design Competition that his passion for art was once again ignited. His first acrylic work entitled Dahon ng Buhay was chosen as a semi-finalist in the competition. From there, this leaf artist started participating in art exhibits and competitions in earnest.
Yel’s vision is to become the first motivational visual artist in the country and to establish a Filipino Art Foundation for out-of-school youths.
Paintings for Marawi
Because of the armed conflict in Marawi, around 50,000 children were displaced, forced to leave their homes to seek refuge in evacuation centers where they are exposed to health risks, such as dehydration, sickness, and hunger. Yel is distressed over the situation and wants to help.

His paintings are gorgeous and will normally fetch him excellent income when sold. He will donate the proceeds to help Marawi’s children instead.

One of Yel’s paintings graces Bo Sanchez’s home. Yel shares an interesting story about it. Years ago, he gave it as a gift but did not identify himself. In 2013 in an interview with Mel Tiangco in the TV show Power House, Bo mentioned that he has been trying to find out who the artist was. Only recently did Yel see that interview and reach out to Bo to introduce himself.
