Blood Free is a star-studded show that will change the landscape of the KDrama scene this year.

Starring Ju Ji-hoon as a former military official turned bodyguard, Han Hyo-joo as the CEO of the global biotech company BF, Lee Hee-jun as the Prime Minister, and Lee Mu-saeng as the head researcher of BF; Blood Free touches on what the cast reveals as relevant issues in today’s day and age.

Blood Free Plot

A sci-fi KDrama set in the future, a company called BF dominates the market of genetically engineered cultured meat, ending millions of years of humans eating animal meat.

At today’s Blood Free press con, the cast promised that we will be seeing new sides to what we are used to seeing from them, and they even shared that they ended up doing a lot of research on lab-grown meat issues to learn more about the topic that the KDrama tackles.

What It Was Like Working on Blood Free

Ji-hoon raves about how Hyo-joo is such a solid actress who provides very dense performances. “When I work with her, I feel like she’s such a solid person,” he shares. “I can rely on her while collaborating with her.”

“He said that he relied on me, but on set, I was the one who relied on him,” Hyo-joo retorts. “As an actor, he has a great presence on set. He also has the eyes of a producer, so if something goes wrong on set, he becomes vocal about it. As someone who is collaborating with him, he is someone I can rely on. I can look at the entire forest instead of just the trees.”

Mu-saeng points out that there are so many cool people in the cast all with their own vibes and colors. “We have really nice chemistry,” he claims. “I think we have so much synergy on set, and I hope that shines through. I am very much looking forward to it.”

Hee-jun is excited to show viewers a new side of him. In fact, he reveals that this is the first time he will be playing this kind of role, so he had an amazing time on set. “There would be amazing restaurants that I would be dining in,” he reveals excitedly.

“They were so luxurious and the whiskeys were really expensive. I’d just look around and have fun looking at those whiskeys on set. I had never been to these places, but because of my role, I was able to visit them.”

Despite Blood Free tackling such a heavy topic, Ji-hoon promises the KDrama does its best to make it lighter. “The serious topics are discussed in a light way, and it is definitely something we need to think about,” he stresses.

Hyo-joo completely agrees. “When I was reading the script, I was thinking, ‘This is so timely.’ This is a series we need at this moment,” she shares, adding that it is such an interesting topic. “I actually wrote in my journal that I’m so happy that I have this script that is a masterpiece.”

The cast also reveals that they ended up searching about some lab-grown meat issues because the drama will make you want to delve more into them. “We have some lab-grown meat technologies and there are some issues that could come with it,” they share. “These are some things that are worth thinking about. It was definitely good food for thought, and we hope the viewers will think the same way.”

Director Park Cheol-hwan is very satisfied with the entire drama, saying that it was an honor for him to work on it. “When I was preparing for this show, I didn’t know the final list of cast,” he reveals.

“When I heard that these people are joining, they’re such big names, so I was taken aback a little bit. We have a perfect script. We have veteran actors. What else can I ask for? I was fearless when I was on set because there was nothing that could go wrong.”

Blood Free starts streaming on Disney+ on April 10, 2024.
