It’s a given that we have to be formal and courteous in our conversations, whether in-person or online, with our bosses. But is it a little too much to ask for leeway when it comes to replying with phone emojis?
Well, this employee from China found out the hard way that her boss was not at all accommodating of her usage of an “okay” emoji when she was asked through WeChat to send over some meeting documents.
“You should use text to reply to the message if you have received it. Don’t you know the rules?” the manager replied, according to a report by South China Morning Post. “Is this your acknowledgment of receipt?”
The employee was later told to submit her resignation letter to HR immediately.
Screenshots of the text conversation went viral on Weibo, China’s equivalent to Twitter, amassing millions of views on the topic and divided reactions among locals. Some explained that any reason could be a valid reason for a boss to fire someone, while others came to the employee’s defense.
According to the employee, her resignation is still being processed. Meanwhile, her boss has reportedly made an official announcement for all employees to reply with “Roger” to his texts.
