Binibining Pilipinas 2014: 5 Glittery and Unexpected Moments

Binibining Pilipinas 2014: 5 Glittery and Unexpected Moments

Indeed, Binibining Pilipinas has proven itself to be one of the most prestigious and glamorous yearly events when in Manila. This popularity is derived from the streaks of success of the new generation binibinis who sashay  in the international beauty arena. Speaking of streaks, Binibining Pilipinas 2014 flashed some unexpected spectacles that one might smile or frown about during the coronation.

Pia Wurtzbach’s Tagalog Q&A

While I am personally not a big fan of Pia, I deeply admire this lady. Obviously, she is a good speaker since she nailed the Q&A portion last year and ended up with a 1st RU title. But last coronation, she was asked by Sen. Angara in Tagalog (Ano ang pinakamahalagang leksyon matuturo ng babae sa buong munro?), which she also tried her best to answer in the vernacular. But oh, Sen. Angara must’ve forgotten that the other judges are diplomats and Ms. Universe 2013, Gabriella Isler, cannot even understand Tagalog.

Pia did suggest to answer the question in English for the other judges to understand, but due to time constraints, she wasn’t able to do that. It just made everybody think about the “what if’s” had she answered the question in English instead.

MJ Lastima’s “Celebration of a Woman” and Sushmita Sen’s “Essence of Being a Woman”

Aside from the fact that MJ has a very huge fan base, a stunning aura and quite a long experience of joining Bb. Pilipinas (this is her 3rd time to join the said pageant), she answered the question very well. She was asked by none other than Miss Universe 2013 Gabriela Isler, “What is the greatest advantage of being a woman?”

Lastimosa answered: “The advantage of a woman is being able to compose ourselves, just like here. We’re standing in front of thousands of people … but we try to compose ourselves..tonight, thousands of people are standing here celebrating the beauty of a woman – and that is the advantage of being a woman.”

This answer reminds me of Sushmita Sen, MU 1994, who had a similar answer for her Q&A revolving around the celebration of being a woman and the essence of being a woman. I just hope that MJ will follow her footsteps and continue the streaks of the Philippines in Miss Universe.

Parul Shah’s Nicki Minaj/Kim Kardashian Look

Is it just me or does Parul Shah, Bb. Pilipinas Tourism 2014, have the same aura as Nicki Minaj or Kim Kardashian? This half-Indian beauty is very stunning with her exotic features and captivating smile. This is also her second time joining Bb. Pilipinas. I can’t just figure out who she really looked like during the coronation, but one thing is for sure: she definitely left a mark that made her stood out among the 39 ladies.

Yvethe Santiago Trending on Twitter

Unlike repeaters like Parul and MJ, first-timer Yvethe also has a huge fan base. During the Binibining Pilipinas 2014 coronation, these three women brought about an uproar from their fanatics, and I am proud to say that I also cheered for this lovely Bicolana. Although some fans were expecting a higher finish (specifically the coveted Bb. Pilipinas Universe crown) rather than the Supranational crown, Yvethe was still able to make some noise. In fact, she is the only candidate who trended on Twitter during the Binibining Pilipinas 2014 coronation.

Kenneth Santiago’s “Shoe Sacrifice”

This is probably one of the most unexpected highlights of the night. Kenneth Santiago, Binibini # 20, is not a Kevin Balot or a Jenna Talackova – just a name that would resound if she won the pageant. I can already see the tabloids scream “Kenneth won Bb. Pilipinas 2014!” Aside from her unusual name, her answer in the Q&A was another unexpected highlight of the event. Kenneth Santiago was asked by Ms. Precious Lara Quigaman to “Name one thing you would sacrifice for a Bb crown.”

“My SHOES,” says Kenneth. She says that she loves her shoes, they’re hard to find because of her big shoe size, but she’d give them up for the crown! I was actually blown away! I was expecting a kind of pageant-ish answer like “Nothing’s going to make me sacrifice the crown” or the more personal answers like family, love life or religion. But no! With a confident and spontaneous answer that made sense, the crowd went wild! You go, girl!

As early as now, pageant fanatics not just in the Philippines but all over the world are looking forward to the fate of these ladies in their respective international journeys. As early as now, the pressure is on for the newly crowned binibinis. But before they make noise abroad, let’s show them our continuous streak of support when in Manila.
