Breadwinner: Winning the Sandwich Game – One Toast at a Time!

When in Manila, you will never really run out of food choices — from affordable and delicious burgers to cleverly presented dishes — and it only gets better everyday.

To support the cause of creating more wonderful menus and innovative food hubs, Ateneo de Manila has launched the JSEC Challenge, where they bring the best ideas of their top students into life. From a series of screenings, tests, and interviews, the panel chooses the most enticing pitch and gives the students a chance to have their own stall and store for a year. Through refreshments, snacks, and even meals, JSEC has became a food haven for the students, as well as for mere visitors of Ateneo de Manila.

One of the most interesting food stalls at JSEC is The Breadwinner. Serving toast with unique, and not to mention delicious, flavors, The Breadwinner is definitely one of those sandwich stalls that deserves a visit every time you’re in Blue Eagle territory. A brain child of five senior students — Jason Uy, Chabeli Cua, James Qua, Michelle Co, and Sidney Aquillino — The Breadwinner is actually a reflection of the students’ active and busy life. When you’re juggling school activities, academics, and your own personal life, you need something quick, fast, and mess-free — and that is where The Breadwinner comes in.

The Breadwinner’s Menu — talk about affordable snacks!

The Breadwinner serves mess-free sealed toasted bread, which are created on the spot and stuffed with various fillings, depending on what tickles your fancy. It’s perfect when you are on the go and each sandwich is definitely hassle-free, perfect for when you’re on your way to class or when you’re running errands for your organization. As of today, they are offering four yummy flavours: Nutella Cheesecake, Blueberry Cheesecake, Apple Chicken Pesto, and Roasted Toast. However, they are also looking at expanding their sandwich menu this coming school year.

What makes them unique is that they are not serving the traditional tomato, lettuce, ham, cheese toast combos. Instead, they go out-of-the-box by serving flavors that we don’t usually consider as “sandwiches”. These sandwiches vary from sweet to tasty, but all taste wonderful nonetheless. I had the chance to try out all of their flavors, and I must tell you: I fell in love.

The Roast Toast (Php 75)

My favorite from the bunch is their Roast Toast, which is filled with roast beef and drizzled with sumptuous gravy. It captures the taste of the beef perfectly, and complements the toast very well. I love the fact that it has a crispy side, just like a panini of some sort.

I also adore their Nutella Cheesecake, which has a crushed graham base with a dash of nutella and cream cheese. It goes perfectly with their house blend iced tea, which is freshly brewed by their crew in the morning.

Aside from their tasty toast, they also serve onion rings and fries, which go well with the toast. They also sell various drinks, depending on your preference.

The Breadwinner will be around JSEC for the whole school year, so don’t miss the chance to pay them a visit if you’re around the vicinity. Yummy, affordable, and different — what more could you ask for? Support these student entrepreneurs, and who knows? We might see them with a bigger stall soon enough, bringing their masterpieces out to the world!
