SUSI: Eating Healthy Never Tasted This Good

I have always wanted to keep a healthy lifestyle, but of course, this requires some effort. To be able to achieve that, I have to consistently exercise and eat healthy by keeping food rich in fat and carbs away from the table. How could I possibly resist a generously stuffed burger and an enticing pizza, though?

This tends to become even harder because we think of healthy, organic food as something that lacks in taste, color, and excitement… but nope! My latest discovery in Burgos Circle made me think twice.

SUSI, the restaurant’s name which I thought was a name of a person, literally means key. Thus, its catchphrase “Key to Sustainable Living”.

If you’re vegan or are planning to be one, you may get excited upon reading, “We’re vegan and gluten-free.” And yes, you have more reasons to be. With the restaurant’s cozy vibe, you will not only get to enjoy the dishes, you will also appreciate the place that is mostly made of wood andstuffed with homey pieces. It’s perfect for any weather as it feels like home. They have calming music to match the cozy couches and pillows, too! The place is perfect for relaxation, which is something to say since good food is better savored at an equally pleasant place.

What’s a good place without good food? SUSI strives hard to create gluten-free dishes that are not just healthy, but will also satisfy your tastebuds. Owner Bianca Mabanta, who has been a vegan for over 10 years, shares that everything on the menu stems from her own recipes. She is also hands-on in the kitchen.

 Quinotto (Php415)

This Teriyaki Risotto made use of tri-color Quinoa rice, topped with king oyster mushroom ‘scallops’ with lemon zest strips over it. It has a sandy, grainy texture with flavors that aren’t too overpowering.

 The Gaudi (Php315)

This raw lasagna made with layers of zucchini, pesto, cashew cheese, and raw marinara is a yummy way to go vegan.  Its color is so inviting, too! It is also a refreshing way to eat veggies since it is served cold. You can taste the bursting flavors of the ingredients as they melt in your mouth. Plus, one serving is already enough because it is hearty and filling.

 Cacao That Cares (Php315)

This glazed dark chocolate-peanut butter tart topped with salted pretzels is absolutely guilt-free! Who would’ve taught you can take in choc and peanut butter without having to worry about sinning? The dark chocolate and peanut butter complement each other well, and the pretzel bits on top give this dessert texture and accent. A definite must-try!

Owner Bianca Moran Mabanta.

Having been a vegan for over 10 years now, it’s pretty obvious that Bianca has reaped the great results of choosing healthy. It is her advocacy to promote veganism to save the animals, the planet and the people.

SUSI is the only vegan, gluten-free restaurant in Metro Manila. If you are one or are planning to become a vegan, the door is open for your visit. This is one yummy way to go healthy!
