There are so many beautiful places in the Philippines. It’s shocking to me how some people are not well versed of San Juan La Union. San Juan, La Union is the surfing capital of the north. It’s not that far away from Manila but people are skeptical to go especially when they are not surf junkies. Don’t worry, it’s not just a place for surfing. Although you should not skip a surfing lesson when you are here!
I rode a bus as I always do. Public transportation is only hectic in the city but going to La Union is really easy! It’s only 4-6 hours away depending on traffic from Cubao. You can ride Genesis, Fariñas, Florida or Partas. I usually go at night and wake up to find that I am already there. The resorts and the beach in San Juan are along the highway that’s why it’s really easy to get there!

5. Have Coffee & Brunch at El Union, Flotsam & Jetsam
Flotsam and Jetsam is a small inn/hotel for travellers. Most of their clients are young people from Manila who want to see and experience the culture in La Union. They offer breakfast for Php 150.00 with coffee from the breakfast bar. They also have El Union which is their coffee shop. Really good hand crafted coffee.
4. SURF
Don’t feel intimidated. There are a lot of first time surfers here. I personally think that the waves in La Union (compared to Siargao, Baler, Bagasbas etc) is the best for beginners especially for low tide because it’s easy to hop on your board because the water is shallow from the shore. The waves are not as strong as other places in the Philippines but yes they are very strong if you compare it to Boracay or whichever non-surfing waters. Don’t forget to wear a rash guard because there are times that the waves are too strong that your bikinis might fall off! (Happened many times!)Â 
You can rent a board with an instructor. These instructors are great! We tried San Juan Surf School and they were very friendly and accommodating (most people are!) the prices are all the same. Tip I give to first timers is find an instructor that fits your personality as well. Also, practice standing on shore first before going in the water.
