Spike for Hope: Transforming lives, one spike at a time

Spike for Hope is back! Now in its fifth season, the volleyball tournament will once again raise funds to grant the wishes of children with critical illnesses.

The friendly oft intense but always fun competition between teams composed of pro players and hobbyists is the brainchild of TJ, whose father, actor Tirso Cruz III, unbeknownst to many, is a cancer survivor. He got in touch with his former colleague, Abigail Arcangel, who lost her mother to breast cancer, to ask about the foundation she volunteers for. He learned about the unique mission of the Make-A-Wish global community, fell in love with the cause and hasn’t stopped supporting the advocacy by taking the lead for the five tournaments.

Make-A-Wish Philippines, the local affiliate of Make-A-Wish International, has always been the chosen beneficiary of the organizers of Spike for Hope. TJ and Abi share the same experience of having sick parents and from that bond sprung the passion to make a difference in the lives of children, together with loved ones, who have to deal with the jarring realities of cancer and other critical illnesses. They are very grateful that their families and friends have supported their project and that the cause continues to touch more. To date, Spike for Hope has granted over fifty wishes and its proceeds contributed to the operations of the foundation.

Aside from the games, the highlight of the event is the wish reveal, where the children are surprised with their wishes. Happiness pervades the second they open their eyes to see their most cherished wishes right before their eyes. They may not be feeling well but for those moments, they get to forget they are sick — from that turning point sparks a glimmer of hope. Their families, the players, and volunteers stand in awe and joy as they witness the children’s transformation right before them. “Kayo mismo, mabibless. Matutuwa kayo na you were part of such a worthy cause,” Tirso said.

Spike for Hope 5 is on April 14, at La Salle Greenhills. The tournament is in partnership with La Salle Parents Association, WheninManila.com and PilipinasOOTD. For sponsorships and inquiries, email spikeforhope@gmail.com.
