Smart Joins Global Social Media Day Celebration

PLDT subsidiary and wireless leader Smart Communications recently joined the rest of the world in the digital celebration of this year’s Social Media Day, with the theme #TayoPH.

Social Media Day (#SMDay), an annual global event celebrated every 30th of June, recognizes the digital revolution transforming societies the world over. In the Philippines, the very first social media day was organized in 2012 by TweetUp Manila (TweetUpMNL)—a group of individuals who met via Twitter in 2009—in Makati City.

This year, Smart supported TweetUpMNL to convene various online communities, thought leaders, and influencers to mark the 2016 Social Media Day in a gathering held at the Samsung Hall in in Taguig City, with the theme #TayoPH, a nationwide call for unity and collaboration after a divisive national elections. Smart also joined the first ever North Luzon leg of the Social Media Day celebration held in San Juan, La Union, organized by bloggers from the area.

“It has been a stressful elections for everyone. We have seen friends fight online, un-friending and un-following each other, and saying negative things to one another that marred relationships. Now that it is over, it’s time for us to unite again and come together for nation-building,” said Tonyo Cruz, journalist and co-founder of TweetUpMNL.

To help celebrate #SMDay, PLDT and Smart chairman and CEO, Manuel V. Pangilinan posted on his Twitter account, “To cap off Social Media Day, happy to announce Smart’s new GigaSurf50 – 1GB of data for 3 days. Plus 300mb bonus for iFlix & Youtube #TayoPH,” following the launch of Smart’s new data bundle and the subsequent firing up of a number of 700MHz-powered LTE cell sites nationwide. The bigger data allocation and the continuous network improvement are key components of Smart’s strategy to empower Filipinos to embrace the digital life, and to allow them to benefit from participating in social media.

“With our goal to become the country’s preferred digital services provider, PLDT and Smart have the responsibility to help spread the benefits of a truly digital life to more people as quickly as possible. This includes responding to the needs of the younger generation and making digital services, particularly social media, more accessible and relevant to them,” said Ramon Isberto, head of Public Affairs at PLDT and Smart.
