Skull & Bones: Too Cool for School Comfort Food
Amidst the booming food industry in Katipunan and Maginhawa lies a new restaurant that offers University Comfort Food.
From the makers of The Bowery, Nolita, Les Bagels and Borough, Skull & Bones offers a different menu that appeals to most of the market around UP Town Center.
The interior of Skull & Bones is definitely home-y with accents of things that will remind you of being back in school, like books lined up on the wall, a locker and some sports equipment.
The seating areas in the restaurant are especially designed for students who want to kick back and read a book or to celebrate after a day of exams.
WhenInManila had a chance to catch up with Skull & Bones’ Chef Cuit Kaufman who gave us a little background on what makes University Comfort Food what it is.
“It is something that we used to make or eat back at the University. Something that you whip up with limited resources in dorms,” said Chef Cuit. He also said that they’ve put twists into the usual University Food with a touch of home.
Bacon Cheddar Pullapart Php 360
They had me at Bacon. This bread pullapart is perfect for sharing. It is made of sour dough bread that Skull & Bones baked with cheesy bacon goodness.
Barbeque Pulled Pork Burrito Php 380
If you are in a hurry and want a heavy snack to go, the Barbeque Pulled Port Burrito is very filling because of all of its different elements. It is made with Spanish rice (which you can change to brown rice), pulled pork, barbeque sauce, jalapenos, sour cream, mozzarella, and Monterey Jack cheese in a tortilla with pico de gallo and sour cream.
Skulls & Bones’ Cheese Burger has a hefty patty served in a sesame brioche bun with lettuce, tomatoes, pickles and American cheddar cheese. It also comes with fries on the side.
Midnight Chocolate Cupcake Php 125
The yellow-orange toppings got me curious. It looks like corn/carrots, but is actually just sugar candy. It balances out the dark chocolate flavour of the cupcake and the vanilla filling.
Homemade Twinkies Php 45 and Rasberry Zinger Php 45
I’ll be honest: as soon as I walked in Skulls & Bones, I was eyeing the Twinkies because I barely see them in supermarkets or restaurants in Manila. The Raspberry Zinger is really good, too. It’s basically a raspberry-flavoured Twinkie with coconut shavings. These are the two items on the menu that I will order every time I visit.
Aside from the items we tried, they also serve nachos, chicken tenders, salads, ramen, signature cocktails and beer.
Skull & Bones is the perfect chill-out place, especially during those breaks in-between classes, but it is also a great place for a nice chill night cap with friends.
