Should Princess Leia Become an Official Disney Princess?

Ever since Star Wars teamed up with Disney, I’ve been answering “Princess Leia” whenever someone asks me who my favourite Disney princess is. I loved that they teamed up because that would mean that my daughter would show more of an interest in one of my favorite franchises – one that I have followed since I was 4 years old. (I don’t know why, but slap the word ‘Disney’ on it, and her eyes light up like the sun!)

It isn’t until recently that I learned that Princess Leia Organa wasn’t actually ‘promoted’ to being a Disney princess after Disney bought the Star Wars franchise, after all. After Carrie Fisher passed away, though, a fan-made petition on change.org has been circulating to make her princess persona an official Disney princess. You may check out the petition here.

The petition says, “After the tragic loss of Carrie Fisher, we feel that it is only fitting for Disney to do away with the rule that an official Disney princess must be animated and make Leia a full-fledged princess. This would be a wonderful way to remember Carrie and a welcoming to one of Disney’s new properties that is beloved by millions.”

Now, while it is true that Leia technically isn’t animated in the Star Wars movies she is most known for, I think she would make a spectacular addition to the roster, especially since she is a strong and independent woman, much like the many female characters that Disney has released as inspiration for our kids in the past few years. (Besides, she was in ‘Star Wars Rebels’ anyway, and that was animated, right? :p)

The petition adds, “What we are asking is that the Walt Disney Corporation hold a full ceremony inducting Leia as the newest Disney princess, as well as a special service in memory of Carrie Fisher.”

I think this is a brilliant idea and not just because I’ve been telling my daughter for the past few years that Leia is, in fact, a Disney princess. :p Carrie Fisher – both as Leia and as herself – has always been a great model for me growing up and I fully believe that, even though she has passed away, she can still continue to inspire young girls. And what better way to do that than as an unforgettable Disney princess?
