On Thursday night, SM City Clark’s IMAX theatre became one of the first-ever cinemas to host the premiere of Pirates of the Caribbean: Salazar’s Revenge, the fifth installment of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. The event was a fun gathering of local pirates, complete with men in guyliner and a cheeky parrot to take selfies with.
I wasn’t able to catch the previous installment, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, so I expected to be a little lost, but the writers of Salazar’s Revenge do well to explain the history of any references that might need a background refresher. (Seeing the young Jack Sparrow in action will make your heart race!) The characters and their stories are well-developed, so there are times where you might even sympathize with the film’s eerie Spanish villain.
I won’t spoil the plot because “dead men tell no tales,” but I will say that it was hilariously entertaining to see Johnny Depp get up to all his drunken antics in the spirit of finding hidden treasure and low-key saving the world. He is helped by a new and younger generation of outlaws, but as the trailer promised, we do see some of the old cast back. (Yes, the Orlando Bloom and Kiera Knightly love story continues!) There are some feminism undertones that get my nod, too. All the plot twists will make your heart bust and melt at the same time.
This adventure is guaranteed to be a fun time for everyone – even for those who have never seen any of the Pirates franchise before. Here’s the official trailer to show you what you’re in for:
